I hope everyone enjoyed this year’s John Carson “July 5th” Road Race. The timing company was surprised with the high turnout because of the near record heat…we were not. Thanks to all of you for participating and cheering on the runners… it was a good day.

The elimination of the old chip tied onto the shoe lace was a welcome addition to this year’s race. Bending over to take that thing off was almost as grueling as that last hill heading to the finish line. We will use a similar system next year; I believe that next year there will just be one strip on the back of your race bib.

Ribbons…we ran out of over 700 ribbons which are awarded to all of our younger runners…I guess “younger” is a relative term and I have already ordered 1000 for next year. If you need a ribbon for a runner (and some of you definitely do) please call Sullivan Farms in a couple weeks to see if they are in. Sorry we ran out.

All the age division prizes were mailed out on July 6th…Congratulations, there were some great times on such a hot day. As of today, no one has won the trip for four to Florida…remember we use the night time mass daily lottery number…if your bib matches the number you win!!!

If you were not running then you must have been shaking your head when the winner flew by. Louie Lucini from Ellsworth, Maine won the race in a blistering 8:50 seconds, tying the course record by Patrick Tarpy in 2007. Due to a mix up I made on the registration form Louie will be awarded the $1000 bonus which he deserves. On the women’s side of the race, Andrea Walkonen from Boston ran the second fastest time ever finishing in 10:16. She is only 23 years old so we hope she will come back and try to beat Lesley Lehane’s record of 10:06 set way back in 1998.

Lastly, thanks to all of the Sullivan Farms crew and volunteers at the start, the one mile (Rick and Gold’s Gym) and at the finish line and please don’t forget to thank all the sponsors on the back of the shirt. We hope you enjoyed it. Start training for next year!!

For Mike Maniscalco it means a reunion with his lifelong friends John Burrows and Mark Luxemburger, who he lived with in the 1980s in Los Angeles when they worked for an L.A. based airline PEOPLExpress.

In 2003 Maniscalco invited Burrows and Luxemburger travel from their Ohio and Pennsylvania homes with their families to his Chelmsford house for the Fourth of July weekend. The three families began a tradition of running the road race. The race has propelled the three couple’s seven children to become athletes. Tonight, they will meet up at the Maniscalo’s home for their seventh Chelmsford reunion

“We started out as three couples with no kids and every year we would pick a new place to meet on New Year’s Eve,” said Maniscalco. “…Then kids started coming along and we just see each other whenever we could. Then I just said OK, we’re all old enough to travel and we all used to work in the airline industry, let’s get together again. We invited them up on a whim for July 4 weekend and it all worked out so well.”

Some 25 years ago Luxemburger and Maniscalco met a on a flight traveling to Tampa and became fast friends. With the opening of the Los Angeles port of PEOPLExpress in 1984 Maniscalco and his future wife Lisa were both transferred to Los Angeles International Airport or LAX. Burrows and Luxemburger arrived at LAX several months later.

The three couples’ children have also become friends.

“These seven kids are online talking every night,” said Maniscalco, who lives on Berkshire Road with his wife Lisa and their children: Gracie, Joey and Vinnie.

Burrows’ daughter Kelley, a rising freshman in high school, was never interested in running or sports until her first road race seven years ago. Now, Kelley is working to win her age and division this year. She just missed qualifying for the state championships for the two-mile race in Ohio.

“She had no interest in running whatsoever until she came up and ran the race and was flat out hooked,” said Maniscalco, who now does repair for airlines.

Maniscalco’s two sons Vinnie and Joey are both track runners at Chelmsford High School. His daughter, a rising sixth-grader at Parker Middle School, plays field hockey, lacrosse and basketball.

Looking back on the past seven years, Maniscalco is glad he invited his friends up for the weekend.

“From being roommates in LA to this whole deal,” he said. “It’s kinda neat that we’ve stayed so close.”
